Ed Desaulniers, M.D., Medical Director of the Shute Medical Cinic in London, Ontario, has passed away. Ed was the last physician trained by world renowned vitamin E researcher, Evan Shute. Ed carried forward his mentor’s legacy with integrity and commitment to the principles of orthomolecular, integrative medicine.

Born and raised in West Stockbridge, Massacheusetts, Ed was the oldest of 12 children. He graduated in medicine from the University of Western Ontario in 1975 and joined the Shute Medical Clinic September, 1976. Evan Shute taught Ed about the merit of supplements and nutritional medicine and Ed became the Medical Director after Evan’s death in 1978.

Ed loved sports. He was competitive and enjoyed a hard fought game of squash, tennis or baseball. As a golfer, I think he never gave Tiger Woods a sleepless night. Ed was married and had two sons, Jean-Paul (22 ) and Michael (16 ).

Diagnosed with lung cancer in May, 1999, Ed continued working throughout his treatment until April 2000.

He was a man of integrity, wisdom and courage–a beloved, compassionate and respected physician who cared for his patients, friends and family to the utmost of his ability. Ed lived out his life in service to others. Julian Oates, MD, who joined the clinic in January, was tutored by Ed and will continue the tradition established by the Shute brothers sixty years ago.

For all of us who have been honoured to know Ed, we are richer for the experience. –Janet Shute
